Executions in 2018: min. 690 plus 'thousands' in China

Texas is the state with the highest number of executions within the United States. Since the reintroduction of the death penalty in 1976, 450 prisoners have been executed only in Texas and counted in 2010 for approx. 37% of the total number of executions within the USA.

There are currently around 280 inmates on death row in Texas (data from November 2015) of which 10 are women. The death row for male prisoners is the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, the one for female prisoners in Gatesville.

Living on death row in the Polunsky Unit means solitary confinement or isolation. Beside short showers and five (usually) 2-hours recreation time (on their own) the inmates spend all day alone in their cells.

Prisoners havent got access to TVs, handicraft work material neither do they get any work- or education-programms. They are allowed though to have a certain amount of soft-cover books, a radio and writing equipment – that means a pen-friendship becomes very important for them.

General Mail rules

You may send letters, greeting- and postcards. The greeting-cards have to be fully filled in (not just the insert), otherwise the card will be returned.
The name and address of the sender has to be legibly written on the envelope (as well as on postcards). We do recommend to mention the address in the letter as well, in case the envelope gets opend and damaged in the mailroom.
It is not allowed to send stamps, cash or money-orders.
You might send photos, but no polaroids, no photos which may be  provocative in any way.

Please, ask your pen pal about the up-to-date mailing rules, photo rules and gift rules.  Since these rules change very fast, it's not always possible for us to make a valid assessment of these stipulations.

Pending US-Executions

Unfortunately the United States of America still is one of the countries which regularly executes people.

You’ll find a list of the already scheduled executions here.
