Executions in 2018: min. 690 plus 'thousands' in China

Afghanistan

Normally the death penalty is executed in Afghanistan through hanging or shooting.

Because of the insecure political situation caused by the Taliban, it is difficult to find binding figures since executions very frequently take place under complete arbitrariness.

Reasons for death sentences are among others officially murder, adultery, homosexuality, rejection of the Islamic faith.

According to amnesty international at least 15 persons were executed in 2008, the number of undetected cases is estimated higher. The government under president Hamid Karzai confirmed for the year 2012 another 14 executions carried out by hanging and 5 executions in 2014. In May 2016 six executions of terrorists were publicly announced and another five executions during the year 2017.

Data from December 2017.
